Fortifying IT Security for a Leading Canadian Bank - Caspian One Client Stories

The Challenge

The bank’s IT security infrastructure had become outdated, exposing it to significant cyber risks. Legacy FTP-based data transfers lacked the necessary security measures, making them vulnerable to interception. At the same time, critical security flaws in the AS400 and Compass frameworks created gaps that needed urgent remediation.

With a large customer base and a regulatory environment that demands continuous improvement in cybersecurity, the bank recognised the need for immediate action. They required a partner with deep expertise in modern security frameworks and a proven ability to execute complex system transformations. Caspian One was selected to lead the initiative, bringing in specialist consultants to develop a secure, scalable solution that would address both current risks and future-proof the bank’s operations.

Our Approach

From day one, Caspian One embedded a dedicated team of cybersecurity and infrastructure specialists within the bank’s operations, working closely with internal security and governance teams. A structured roadmap was developed to ensure a seamless transition from outdated systems to modern, high-security infrastructure.

A key focus of the project was eliminating vulnerabilities in data transfer mechanisms. The team transitioned all FTP-based data exchanges to SFTP, implementing advanced encryption protocols to prevent unauthorised access. Alongside this, security assessments using SNYK vulnerability detection tools identified and resolved threats within the AS400 and Compass systems, strengthening the bank’s overall security posture.

Governance played a critical role in the transformation. A joint governance model was introduced, ensuring that every change aligned with the bank’s long-term security strategy. This approach allowed for real-time oversight, proactive risk management, and adaptability to emerging threats.

The Outcome

By the time the project was completed, the bank’s IT security had undergone a complete transformation. High-risk vulnerabilities were eliminated, ensuring customer transactions and internal banking operations were safeguarded against cyber threats. Modernised data transfer protocols enhanced regulatory compliance and operational resilience, while the structured governance framework enabled ongoing security improvements, keeping the bank at the forefront of cybersecurity innovation.

This project was more than just a security upgrade - it demonstrated how legacy systems could be transformed into robust, future-ready assets. By combining deep technical expertise with a structured, adaptive approach, we helped the bank turn a critical challenge into an opportunity for long-term security excellence.
