Acquiring an MSE Manager to Drive Broadcast Technology Innovation - Caspian One Client Stories

The Challenge

Timeline Television, an industry-leading broadcast technology and services provider, required a Media Systems Engineering (MSE) Manager as part of an internal restructure. The goal was to relieve the pressure on their existing leadership, particularly in managing IT and MSE operations. Despite multiple hiring attempts through direct sourcing, the right expertise was proving impossible to find.

“Media Systems Engineering at Timeline is a little different to most MSEs in the industry. We just couldn’t find the right person,” explained Lynne Hobbs, Timeline’s Internal Recruiter. “We advertised it a couple of times, but it wasn’t the right people applying.”

The challenge lay in the unique nature of the role - it wasn’t a traditional IT or Broadcast Engineering position, making it difficult to attract candidates with the necessary blend of skills. After months of unsuccessful searches, “I rang Caspian One and said, ‘Help,’” Hobbs recalled, turning to our team for a more targeted approach.

Our Approach

A Caspian One consultant led the engagement, working closely with Timeline’s internal recruiter and hiring manager to gain a deep understanding of the role beyond what was written in the job description. “A job description just doesn’t give the full picture, so I always want the recruiter to speak with the hiring manager directly,” Hobbs noted.

By tapping into our extensive industry network, we conducted a precise search, identifying candidates with the right mix of technical expertise, leadership ability, and industry-specific experience.

  • Six subject-matter experts were identified and submitted

  • All six progressed to first interviews

  • A successful hire was made, securing the right expertise for the role

Throughout the process, we ensured constant communication and collaboration, keeping all parties aligned from initial screening through to offer stage and onboarding. “Caspian One has always been straightforward, open, and kept me informed on every step of the process,” Hobbs shared.

The Outcome

The successful hire transformed operational efficiency at Timeline Television, relieving pressure on senior leadership, particularly in IT and MSE operations. The new MSE Manager brought critical expertise that had been missing from the internal hiring process, addressing long-standing challenges that had stalled previous recruitment efforts. Their impact was immediate, streamlining workflows and enabling the business to operate more effectively.

Beyond the initial hire, this success also paved the way for further growth. Caspian One later placed an additional Engineer into the team, further strengthening Timeline’s technical capabilities. “I usually give you guys more jobs than I give others because of the success rate,” Hobbs confirmed. Timeline Television has since described the hire as “absolutely bloomin’ marvellous,” recognising the long-term value of securing the right talent through industry expertise and precision skills acquisition.
